Google NotebookLM Adds Customizable AI Podcast Tones and Voices

Google's AI-powered research and note-taking tool, NotebookLM, just got a significant upgrade. Users can now personalize the tone and select new voices for their AI-generated Audio Overviews. These innovative podcasts, featuring AI virtual hosts, condense and discuss documents uploaded to NotebookLM, ranging from academic readings to legal documents.

This update offers unparalleled flexibility in how users interact with their information. When creating an Audio Overview, you can now tailor the podcast's format to suit your specific needs:

  • Deep Dive: Experience in-depth conversational dialogues as two AI hosts explore the topic with probing questions and detailed analysis.
  • Brief: Get a concise overview designed for quickly understanding the essential concepts from your sources.
  • Critique: Receive a constructive review of your sources, complete with valuable feedback aimed at enhancing your work.
  • Debate: Listen to two AI hosts present contrasting viewpoints on your sources, fostering critical thinking and a deeper understanding.

Each format provides customizable duration options, allowing users to control the length of the AI podcast.

Beyond customizable tones, Google has also answered user requests by introducing new voices for the AI podcasts, enhancing the listening experience.

This launch follows a series of recent improvements to NotebookLM. Just weeks ago, the platform gained Video Overviews, transforming dense multimedia into easily digestible visual presentations. Featured notebooks from diverse authors, researchers, and organizations have also been added, offering users a wide range of topics to explore. In May, Google released standalone NotebookLM apps for both Android and iOS devices.

The new formats for NotebookLM are rolling out globally in all supported languages, ensuring accessibility for all users this week, according to Google.
